Scottish SMEs set for broadband boost

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Scotland are set to reap the benefits from over £100 million of government investment in broadband provisions in the country.

Ministers have revealed which areas the scheme will focus on, with parts of Fife, Moray, Argyll, Dumfries, Galloway and Aberdeenshire all included.

“For some of the locations announced today this will be the first time they have had access to a high quality, fibre broadband service and this will make a real difference to communities and businesses across the country,” said Scottish secretary Alistair Carmichael.

He added that it was “good” to see progress being made on plans to deliver a transformation in broadband across Scotland by 2015.

The amount represents around 20 per cent of the UK government’s rural budget and should “ensure the widest possible coverage for fast, reliable fibre broadband”.

Better connectivity for businesses should allow them to work more flexibly and open their operations up to a wider base of consumers. It could also encourage further investment in the local economy from private companies that may have previously been put off taking their operations to areas where broadband provisions were poor.
