Business and technology have traditionally been seen as incredible male sectors, but it looks like this is changing.
Domain name company 123-reg found that 27 per cent of its customers are women – up from nine per cent in 2012 and an indication that the gender gap in website ownership has continued to narrow in the last few years.
According to Thomas Vollrath, chief executive officer (CEO) of 123-reg’s parent company, Host Europe Group, the figures spell a positive development for the internet, a medium which he says should be open to all sections of society.
Mr Vollrath said: “The fact is that more women are now turning to business and the news that 40 per cent of the government’s start-up Loans scheme has gone to female entrepreneurs is further encouragement.”
It may be that uncertainty surrounding employment is prompting more women to start their own business and take control of their own careers. Whatever the reason, hopefully this upward trend will continue.
