HMRC gives people "power" to manage their own tax

By April of next year, millions of taxpayers will be able to take control of their own affairs through online accounts, thanks to a huge digital investment.

HM Revenue and Customs’ (HMRC) digital services will benefit from a £200 million investment from the government designed to make it easier for businesses and self-employed people to manage their tax payments.

The good news is, this means that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will be able to spend more time on developing their companies, rather than having to waste time on paperwork and pointless red tape.

Exchequer secretary David Gauke said: “We want to give people the power to manage their tax affairs online as easily as they manage their bank accounts and this investment of over £200 million will allow HMRC to deliver a digital tax service fit for the twenty-first century.”

On top of empowering individuals, HMRC says the move will also help it catch the few who cheat the system – thereby removing unfair competitive advantages.
