Don’t fancy working behind the Union bar this semester? Why not try your hand at freelancing, with our top tips…

Cash can be a bit tight when you’re at university, there’s no getting round that. But one way to earn some extra money is doing a bit of freelancing work on the side.

Juggling freelancing with your studies can be a tall order, but with our top tips, you’ll find it a breeze.

Manage your time
The golden rule of freelancing is time management. And when you’re trying to fit it in around your studies, this becomes even more important. You’ll have seminars, tutorials, lectures and a whole host of social events to cram into your calendar so it’s imperative that you manage your time effectively. That way you’ll be able to cope with everything that university throws at you. And if that sounds like hard work, take advantage of one of the many time management apps out there to help.

Make the most of your networks
Starting at university means opening yourself up to a whole load of new networks. From other students and societies, to new communities and local businesses, your time at uni will introduce you to a whole world of opportunity. If this all sounds a bit daunting, then start small. Post on your union’s notice board or Twittersphere and dip your toes into the possibilities.

Be open to new ideas
University is the ideal time for a little experimentation, and there’s no reason that you can’t mix things up with your freelancing as well. You might be well-versed in a certain topic or media, but university is the perfect chance to try something new. And you never know where different routes might take you…

Make the most of apps
It all feels a bit overwhelming, doesn’t it? Payments, invoicing, scheduling, the lot. But with the wonders of modern technology, you can look after all that while you’re watching the latest hit Netflix show. There are a whole host of apps out there covering everything from time management to taking care of invoicing, so there’s no excuse not to stay on top of things.

Prioritise your studies
With everything else going on, it might be easy to forget that you’re actually at university to study. But if you want to get that degree, you’re going to have to focus on your education and that should mean that the freelancing takes a backseat. Some times of the year will be busier than others when it comes to coursework, so load your freelancing work accordingly and give yourself time to dedicate to your work.

Remember to have fun
OK, so you’re at university to get an education but you’re also there to let your hair down, experience new possibilities and generally have fun! So while freelancing might be a great way to earn some extra dosh on the side, don’t let it stand in the way of your university experience.
