Flexible working ‘should always be encouraged’

Small businesses are always keen to manage their resources in an efficient manner.

If companies want to grow in a crowded marketplace, then employee engagement is essential.

One of the best ways of keeping staff happy – aside from pay rises – is to offer them flexible working, as this means they can tailor their shifts to suit their personal circumstances.

Mary Mercer, principal consultant at the Institute for Employment Studies, told HR Magazine that this measure should not just be “bolted onto traditional ways of management”.

Instead, it should be made clear it will not negatively affect a person’s career if they decide to work from home or have flexible hours, but rather a culture that encourages the practice should be developed.

This option is one that all companies should consider rolling out, as it will allow them to demonstrate their loyalty to their employees.
