Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that employee a number of people must make sure they are training staff or they will lose them – particularly the younger ones.
A survey of office workers commissioned by Skillsoft found that only 48 per cent of 16 to 24 year olds feel their employer is giving them the proper guidance at work, with a further 20 per cent looking elsewhere to get the training they need to progress.All of this means that almost a quarter (23 per cent) of young recruits plan to leave their positions within a year of starting so they can gain employment in a firm that values their career development.
SMEs must tread carefully, as if they do not invest in their staff, they can’t expect their staff to invest in them. Besides, having excellent employees can be a major competitive advantage.
Simon Brown, head of learning transformation at Lloyds Banking Group, warned: “Businesses need to consider whether they want to have the worst trained people in the industry and feel assured that they are going to stay with them, or have the best trained people and reduce the risk of them leaving by offering them challenging careers.”
