In a recession, finding gainful employment can always be difficult.
Small and medium-sized enterprises may not have the resources to take on new members of staff, while job security is an issue across the whole country.
Because of this, many people choose to set up their own business and embrace entrepreneurship.
The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics back up this point, as they show that the number of self-employed individuals is up 367,000 in the four years to the end of 2012.
However, 60 per cent of this increase occurred between 2011 and 2012, which demonstrates how more and more people are taking this decision.
On top of this, 84 per cent of individuals who have gone down this route were at least 50 years of age.
Hopefully, the government will give these people the right level of support, as entrepreneurship is something that every nation needs.
