Most people want to be liked, and certainly nobody wants to be thought of as a bad boss.
Workers both in the UK and the USA have been polled on who they think are the worst leaders in the workplace as depicted on television, Business Matters magazine reports.
The research, conducted by business training video specialist Video Arts, revealed David Brent from The Office – played by Ricky Gervais – was the official boss from hell chosen from this side of the pond.
Other British top 10 bad bosses named in the poll were Basil Fawlty, Lord Alan Sugar and Edmund Blackadder.
In American offices, Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly – from The Devil Wears Prada – received the unwanted accolade.
The findings puzzled Video Arts chief executive Martin Addison, who said: “500 years ago, Machiavelli posed the question of whether it is better to be loved or feared as a leader. Interestingly, when asked who they would least like to work for, British workers chose a boss who strives to be loved by those around him.”
On the US poll, Mr Addison summarised workers tended to opt against someone who wants to be feared.
