Worldwide membership in car sharing schemes is predicted to increase from 2.3 million to over 12 million by the year 2020, says the study by Navigant Research.
Senior research analyst Lisa Jerram said: “Car sharing is viewed by both public and private entities as a powerful tool to reduce urban congestion and lower emissions of greenhouse gasses.”
Attitudes are continuing to change in leading cities according to Friends of the Earth, which says the increasing cost of driving will force motorists to at least consider alternatives over the coming years.
Since the 1990s the market has blossomed from a small network used by small and medium-sized enterprises to one utilised by multinational companies.
