The weather and technological challenges are some of the main issues small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are concerned about in 2014, according to a new report.
More than two-fifths (41 per cent) of firms also experienced growth in the last three months, the Zurich SME Risk Index has claimed.
However, while confidence is on the increase, it appears as though companies are still mindful of the delicate nature of the economy and how quickly things could turn against them.
Local network system failures were one of the main technological risks businesses were fearing, the survey found, while worries of an ageing workforce were also high on the agenda.
Zurich Insurance’s director of SME Richard Coleman highlighted another concern, which is topical at the moment because of the recent bad weather.
“With flooding in recent months causing disruption to many businesses, it’s likely that many SME owners need to consider moving major incident risk management closer to the top of their priority list,” he said.
